東西 EastWest - Earthy Journeys

東 = East 西 = West 東西 = Object

The ritual of tea drinking in the East is equivalent to that of coffee in the West. Both tea and coffee are stimulating to the senses: seductive aroma, soothing warmth, bitter taste and hues of profound colours.

東西 is a series of everyday objects that symbolises the fusion of Eastern and Western rituals. It investigates and proposes new possible ways of cultural fusion, while emphasizing on harmonious coexistence of nature and human, equilibrium between handicraft and design, and the balancing of function and soul.

Journey 01 Fusion I Harmony

Two origins: A Chinese teacup and a Western coffee mug morph towards each other in a linear and logical manner, with the intention of reaching a harmonised form that merges the two origins neutrally. The story develops in two parallel production methods: manual and digital - manual modeling with hands and 3D morphing with the computer. Complementary results are generated as they reciprocally influence one another.

Journey 02 Memory I Sensuality

It records the journey of a cup from the potter’s wheel to the hands of the user, how it arises from the earth and takes shape in the potter’s hands to become a functional and emotional object. It intends to register how the cup transforms through the touches of different hands and transmits the potter’s memory and sensuality to the beholder.

Journey 03 Balance I Nature

The pieces demonstrate contrasting finishes and textures: the coexistence of a functional, smooth interior and a sensational, rigorous exterior. They render dialogues between nature and humans, and the balance of the object’s soul and its utility.
